This gene encodes a humoral growth factor necessary for megakaryocyte proliferation and maturation, as well as for thrombopoiesis. The encoded protein is a ligand for the product of the myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
